It’s a life reversal. Korean-American big leaguer Daein Dunning, 29, of the Texas Rangers, has suddenly been recognized as one of the top players in each division this season who hasn’t been an All-Star, but has been playing well.메이저사이트
On Aug. 18, CBS Sports recognized six players from each of the six divisions who have gone unnoticed but have continued to play well. Kim Ha-Sung (San Diego Padres) was selected for the National League West, while Chaz McCormick (Houston Astros) was selected for the American League West.
However, CBS Sports also gave out an honorable mention award. Speaking of second place, they picked Dunning to finish second in the American League West. Dunning is a Korean-American right-hander who has been invited to play for South Korea at the 2023 WBC.
At the time, Dunning politely declined due to season-ending hip surgery. After returning to health, Dunning played well this season. In 26 games (18 starts), he is 9-4 with a 3.10 ERA, a .237 batting average, a 1.14 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts in 127⅔ innings.
Texas made a major addition to its starting rotation ahead of this season. Led by the acquisition of Jake DeGrom for five years and $185 million, they completely overhauled their starting rotation through free agency and trades. Dunning, who started all 29 games last year and went 4-8 with a 4.46 ERA, was moved to long relief.
But when DeGrom went down with Tommy John surgery, Dunning made a spectacular return to the starting rotation and exceeded expectations. He is 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 18 starts and 2-2 with a 1.77 ERA in eight appearances out of the bullpen. In August, he’s also been very solid, going 1-0 with a 2.18 ERA in three games. It’s a turnaround no one saw coming.
“Texas spent all that money on pitching in the offseason, and yet it’s Dunning who leads Texas in innings pitched,” said CBS Sports. In fact, Dunning is tied for the team lead in innings pitched with Jon Gray. His current status on the mound is second only to ace Nathan Iovaldi (11-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 19 starts).
“Dunning has allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of his 18 starts and hadn’t struck out double-digit batters in a half until August, but in August he recorded 11 strikeouts (7⅔ innings, one hit, one walk against the Chicago White Sox on July 3) and 12 strikeouts (7 innings, 12 hits, one walk against the San Francisco Giants on July 14),” CBS Sports reports.
Texas is 72-49 and in sole possession of first place in the American League West. They have a 2.5-game lead over the second-place Houston Astros. They need to win the division to challenge for the pennant. If Dunning can win a World Series ring this year, it will be his best year yet. And for Dunning, it’s already the best season of his career. As South Korea prepares for the 2026 WBC, it’s important to keep an eye on Dunning.
